Hot Buttered Rum Mix

Homemade for the Pantry: Tip Tuesday

You’ll want to make this delicious Hot Buttered Rum mix to get ready for my Thirsty Thursday post (hint hint).

‘Tis the season for warm wintery drinks.  My husband would always pick up a tub of Hot Buttered Rum mix from the store.  I enjoyed it, but last year I started looking at the ingredients…and then decided to look into how I could make this at home.  A common thread for many of these homemade for the pantry tips I have.  And I was shocked in a not-so-schocked kind of way that I had all the ingredients at home!  (OK, for this I did splurge out to the store for a whole nutmeg to grate!  Oh, and a cute jar to keep it in from Le Parfait.).

Friends, it’s butter and spices.  You’ve got this!   If these spices are not something you keep on hand (I have an aversion to cloves, so I never have this spice on hand), find a local specialty store that has bulk items.  There you can get spices in small amounts you need instead of spending dollars on something that you will use a tiny bit of and lose in your cupboard.

Keep on hand for a cold winter night or make this as a great gift idea!

Here is all you need to get started:

Hot Buttered Rum Mix


Put butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, cardamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in bowl.





















Mix until well blended.





















The mixture should be creamy and thick.









































Add a heaping Tablespoon to a mug, warm water and a shot of Dark Rum.  Return on Thirsty Thursday for a drink with this mix!  Enjoy!



Hot Buttered Rum Mix

  • 1 Stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 Cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cardamon
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • dash of salt



Put softened, room temperature butter in mixing bowl


Add spices.


Mix until well blended.


Store in sealed container in refrigerator.
